When Hilleberg introduced the Akto more than 10 years ago, they never expected it to be such a huge success. But now they know many of you want a room all to yourselves, whether you’re traveling alone or in a group. They’ve continuously fine-tuned the Akto over the years, and today it’s being used in every climate – even on expeditions to the North Pole. And if mimicry is indeed the sincerest form of flattery, then the Akto is beyond adulation: it has been copied – but never equalled – many times.

While somewhat heavier than a bivy bag, the Akto offers significantly more space, and its vestibule easily accommodates all your gear. Yet it still stuffs down to a package that easily fits into a pack’s side pocket. At the same time, its single-pole, tunnel design sheds wind, snow and rain with nary a problem.

Pitching the Akto is simplicity itself. Insert the pole into the pole sleeve, place the end into the pole tensioner, then peg the corners and the guy lines on each end, and, voila: instant shelter! Fiberglass rods in the corners of the outer tent provide extra height, eliminating the claustrophobia that many solo tents engender, and in windy conditions, the side guy lines ensure stability.

While ideal for hikers, climbers, bicyclists and paddlers, the Akto is also a fine companion for trekkers, who will appreciate having private accommodations when traditional lodging in far flung places is overcrowded, overpriced, or unavailable. Adventure racers, too, have taken to the Akto. By using only the outer tent, a footprint, and a minimal number of pegs and guy lines, these hardy souls create a super light, super stable two person tent. While perhaps not the most comfortable arrangement, this configuration certainly saves weight.

The German outdoor magazine Outdoor gave only the Akto its highest score in the September, 2004, review of solo tents: “Low weight, great wind stability and plenty of space make Akto the best solo tent.”

Retki, the leading outdoor magazine in Finland, called the Akto “a top tent for solo use.”

Chris Townsend, in the April, 2002, issue of the British magazine TGO, awarded the Akto “Best Buy,” because of its low weight, its vestibule and its stability.

Akto means “alone” in Sami.
