Tech bindings: 1982 to now

Search for patents that include the word “Dynafit,” and you’ll find a history of innovation that extends all the way back to 1982, the same year the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at $1046, a gallon of gas cost less than a buck, and the first CD player was sold in Japan.

According to WildSnow.com, everything started with German inventors Manfred and Fritz Barthel. Their dream? A lightweight binding suitable for both touring and downhill skiing. They built the first binding, licensed the technology to Dynafit, and decades later tech bindings are in use on every backcountry trailhead in the world.

Why choose a tech binding?

Tech bindings are designed to be as light as possible, thus making it easier to skin up the hill and then ski down. Instead of using a frame to secure the toe and heel of the binding, a tech binding uses the sole of your boot to accomplish the same task. Compared to alpine bindings, tech bindings are significantly lighter for touring, but strong enough to ski downhill with little to no decrease in performance. The Barthel’s 1982 dream is now a reality.

Features Include

  • An adjustable 5-12 release setting keeps you safe when skiing hard.
  • Super light 585 gram weight per binding
  • Adjustable forward pressure helps keep your boot attached to the binding while maintaining consistent release values.
  • A 33% wider 40mm freeride mount helps you transfer more power from your boot to your edges.
  • A Pop-up “Boot Stop” makes it easier to place your boot into the toe piece.
  • Two heel lifters that are easy to use with a ski pole.
  • Bi-directional heel piece allows you to rotate the heel whichever way you choose.
  • A unique brake lock system that allows the binding to be put into tour mode with the brakes extended, meaning your skis won't run away during transitions. Brakes stow only when the heel is depressed in tour mode.
