The 10 oz compartment/pack comes built to hold and organize the shovel, prove, assorted tools and a small foam butt pad for immediate access when a rescue is needed. This additional pack compartment has minute straps to convert to its own pack. This inner pack can be used independently for hiking from your base camp or added to a full backcountry load.
