Salomon’s MTN Explore 88 is designed for those bigger days where efficiency is everything. Coming in at 1.29 kg a ski in the 177 centimeter length the ski was built to be light but still ski downhill well.
Salomon was able to accomplish this weight to skiability feat by using CFX SuperFiber, a compound made of woven carbon and flax. The carbon provides the stiffness and torsional rigidity of the ski while cutting down on the weight. Most carbon skis have a problem with chatter on firmer snow. The flax acts as a dampening agent and cuts down on the chatter. Additional weight savings come from the Honey Comb Tip which reduces the swing weight and makes jump turns more controlled. The ski is shaped with a medium amount of tip rocker that makes it easy to ski through variable snow and to stay on top of the powder when conditions warrant. Since this is a touring ski there is camber running the rest of the length to maximize grip on the skin track and ensure that the ski holds an edge on the downhill. In order to prevent the ski from catching an edge, Salomon moved the widest parts of the ski as close to the center as possible. This allows the skis to pivot when tight turns are necessary.
The MTN Explore 88 comes with custom cut skins made by Pomoca. These skins climb well, are easily packable and will complete your lightweight setup. The MTN Explore 88 is a one ski quiver for the ski mountaineer.
